The Dryer Guys

Is maintenance different for gas vs. electric dryers?

The vent cleaning is the same for both — lint is lint. But gas dryers carry a second risk: a blocked vent can back up combustion gases (including carbon monoxide) into your home. That makes timely vent cleaning especially critical for gas models, and a CO detector in the laundry room a must.

Electric dryers produce heat by passing air over a resistive heating element. Gas dryers burn natural gas or propane. In both, the exhaust plus lint ends up going out the same vent — so the lint side of the maintenance picture is identical.

For gas dryers specifically: a clogged vent can force combustion byproducts — including carbon monoxide — back into the laundry area. Most modern gas dryers have a safety sensor that will shut them down, but not all, and not always fast enough. A working carbon monoxide detector in or near the laundry room is standard NFPA guidance.

Gas dryers also require a licensed technician for any gas-line or valve work. The vent cleaning itself is still vent cleaning — the same $49.99 inspection and $220 routine applies to gas and electric alike.

There's a burning smell from my dryer — what now?

Stop the cycle immediately, unplug the dryer (or shut off the gas if it's a gas model), and do not run another load. A burning smell from a dryer almost always means lint is scorching inside the unit or vent, which is a pre-fire condition. Schedule an inspection and cleaning before using the dryer again.

When is a dryer vent issue actually an emergency?

Stop using your dryer and call a professional immediately if you smell burning, see smoke or scorch marks, find the dryer exterior hot to the touch, or have a gas dryer taking multiple cycles to dry. These are pre-fire conditions and running another load meaningfully increases the risk.

My dryer is hot to the touch — is that dangerous?

A warm dryer exterior is normal; a dryer exterior hot enough to be uncomfortable to touch is a warning sign. The most common cause is a restricted vent forcing the heating element to run hotter and longer than designed. Stop using the dryer and schedule a vent inspection immediately.
